Why I fell out of love with my apple watch
I decided this week that I am pretty done with my apple watch. (you've been warned, this is a KimPhelanRant (TM)) Why you ask?
I bought the apple watch within a month of launch. I couldn't wait. I believe very strongly in the Jobs-to-be-done framework (look it up....and watch Clay Christensen's milkshake talk) ...so with that premise in mind, I *hired* my apple watch to do the following things:
- Tell me the time (duh)
- Tell me what emails I am getting
- Allow me to see who's calling me without having to look at my phone
- Allow me to text people back easily (siri or quick replies were fine)
- Track my steps & fitness activity
- and other things that will come one day.
Oh wait. ONE DAY NEVER CAME. All of the things that I was really using the watch for, I could have been doing on the next version of the FitBit. I was a fitbit addict til I dumped it for the apple watch. But fitbit had one huge advantage: Battery life. This meant I could wear it to bed...I could go for more than one day without having to charge it.
There is the dream of all the things that it can do one day. But nothing I've seen is as compelling & valuable as the items I hired it for in the first place. I don't want to look like spock and do all sorts of crap on it, I want to see the time, and I want to see key notifications from my phone. end of story. (side rant: it's really hard to look at the time without looking like an impatient asshole because it only comes on when you have full tilt on your arm btw)
So as I return back from the cottage for a week, where we don't have power, (which means I had to leave the apple watch at home, because it only lasts 1 day on a battery,) and I realize I didn't miss it. and I am seriously thinking of getting my fitbit back.
and did I mention it doesn't fit under my derby gear? :D
